IGP Orders 12-Hour Vehicular Ban and Security Sweep for Ondo Governorship Election

As Ondo State gears up for its governorship election on Saturday, November 16, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has mandated a sweeping 12-hour ban on all vehicular movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to tighten security on election day.

This directive, announced on Thursday by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, aims to ensure an orderly and peaceful voting process, with exceptions made only for essential services, including ambulances, accredited media, and fire services.

The IG further reinforced that security aides and VIP escorts would be restricted from following their principals to polling stations or collation centers to avoid any disturbances that might hinder the election process. The police have also imposed a strict ban on unauthorized vehicles using sirens during the election period.

“This vehicular restriction is essential to uphold security on roads, waterways, and other means of transportation throughout the election,” Adejobi emphasized, noting that only essential services will be exempt.

Additionally, he confirmed that unauthorized personnel or quasi-security operatives will not be allowed to operate within polling areas on election day.

The police will extend special allowances to vulnerable groups, including elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring easy access to polling units.

In an extensive security framework for the election, Deputy Inspector General Sylvester Abiodun Alabi will lead the police's strategic security operations, supported by AIG Bennett Igweh and CP Tunji Disu.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to help secure the election’s integrity, and Adejobi reiterated the police’s dedication to a collaborative approach, working with the military and federal security agencies to create a safe and democratic environment for Ondo voters.
