Nigeria is mourning the loss of its Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after an extended illness.
The news was confirmed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday morning.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Lagbaja’s passing, offering condolences to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces. "President Tinubu expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time.
He wishes Lt. General Lagbaja eternal peace and honours his significant contributions to the nation," Onanuga’s statement read.
Lt. General Lagbaja, who was 56, was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. Known for his distinguished military service and leadership, Lagbaja served as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion and played vital roles in numerous internal security operations, including Operations ZAKI, Lafiya Dole, Udoka, and Forest Sanity.
An alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children. His passing marks the end of a military career defined by dedication, bravery, and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s security.
In light of Lt. General Lagbaja’s illness, President Tinubu had recently appointed Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff. Oluyede, a veteran officer, was decorated as Lieutenant General last Tuesday, with President Tinubu commending his dedication and exemplary service. "This recognition reflects your commitment and service to the Nigerian military," President Tinubu stated, adding that Oluyede’s leadership would be essential in ensuring continued stability and security in Nigeria.
Lagbaja’s death has left a profound impact on the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation. Tributes continue to pour in, with many recalling his commitment to maintaining peace across the country.
