The Nigerian Presidency has delivered a stinging response to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of envy and entitlement following his loss to President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election.
In a statement, a presidential spokesperson suggested that Atiku’s recent criticism of Tinubu exposes his frustration over what he perceives as a personal defeat rather than a democratic outcome.
The statement highlighted that Atiku accused Tinubu of “stealing his presidency” a claim the presidency dismissed as a reflection of Atiku’s supposed “arrogance” and failure to connect with the Nigerian electorate.
“President Tinubu won fairly and squarely in an election that showcased the voice and choice of Nigerians,” the spokesperson emphasized.
The presidency noted that, in contrast, Atiku’s perceived entitlement, along with his disregard for national diversity and insensitivity to his party’s power-sharing arrangements, were significant factors in his loss.
The presidency further underscored that Atiku’s alleged refusal to acknowledge Nigeria’s North-South rotation of power after eight years under President Muhammadu Buhari displayed a disregard for the country’s political balance.
They argued that Tinubu’s victory represents a broader alignment with the Nigerian people, who, according to the statement, valued his commitment to unity and progress over what they labeled as Atiku’s “self-serving ambitions.”
In light of these remarks, the presidency made it clear that Atiku’s post-election behavior would not affect Tinubu’s agenda, which, according to officials, remains focused on addressing the country’s pressing challenges and uniting Nigeria’s diverse population.
