Benue Lawmaker David Ogewu Denies Sponsoring Bonta-Okpute Conflict, Calls Allegations, Divisive

Hon. David Ogewu, the representative for Oju/Obi Federal Constituency, has refuted allegations linking him to the ongoing Bonta-Okpute communal crisis in Benue State.

The accusations were leveled by DIIV Progressive Agenda, a group led by Dr. James Amove Ukpoko, who claimed Ogewu was financially backing the conflict between the Ukpute and Bonta communities.

In a statement issued by his media team, Ogewu dismissed these claims as "unfounded" and "distortionary," emphasizing his commitment to peacebuilding in the region.

He highlighted his continuous collaboration with security agencies and his advocacy in the National Assembly, where he has raised motions to bring attention to the crisis and seek federal intervention.

“Rt. Hon. Ogewu remains steadfast in his mission to foster unity and peaceful coexistence in Oju/Obi Federal Constituency,” the statement read, urging all stakeholders to support Governor Hyacinth Alia’s reconciliation efforts.

Ogewu condemned the allegations as an attempt to derail progress toward a peaceful resolution and called on the accusing group to focus on unity rather than fostering division.

Ogewu's response underscores his position as a mediator in the conflict, committed to restoring stability between the Bonta and Ukpute communities.
