1.6 Million Nigerians Living with HIV Are Receiving Treatment – NACA DG

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Temitope Ilori, has revealed that 1.6 million out of Nigeria's estimated two million people living with HIV are currently receiving treatment.

This significant milestone was announced during a media briefing to mark the progress in combating HIV/AIDS in the country.

Dr. Ilori emphasized that this achievement is the result of concerted efforts by the government, international partners, and health organizations to improve access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and provide comprehensive care for people living with HIV.

“Ensuring that 1.6 million Nigerians are on treatment demonstrates our commitment to achieving epidemic control and improving the quality of life for those affected by HIV,” she stated.

Despite this progress, approximately 400,000 Nigerians living with HIV are not yet accessing treatment.

Dr. Ilori highlighted the need for continued public awareness campaigns, improved healthcare infrastructure, and intensified outreach efforts to close the gap.

“Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind. Everyone living with HIV deserves access to life-saving treatment, irrespective of location or socioeconomic status,” she added.

The progress aligns with the United Nations' 95-95-95 targets, which aim to ensure that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, 95% of those diagnosed receive treatment, and 95% on treatment achieve viral suppression.

Dr. Ilori noted that Nigeria is making significant strides toward these targets but acknowledged that more work remains.

NACA called for sustained collaboration between federal and state governments, international organizations, and civil society to maintain and expand access to treatment.

Dr. Ilori also urged individuals to get tested, as early diagnosis is crucial for effective management of HIV.

With increasing treatment coverage and ongoing efforts to address stigma and discrimination, Nigeria is on the path to reducing the burden of HIV and improving the lives of millions.

Dr. Ilori expressed optimism that with sustained momentum, the country could one day eliminate HIV as a public health threat.

The announcement underscores the importance of continued investment and advocacy to ensure a healthier future for all Nigerians living with HIV.
