The family feud surrounding the legacy of late billionaire businessman MKO Abiola has taken a public turn, as his son, Abdulmumuni Abiola, made a heartfelt plea to President Bola Tinubu to step in and mediate.
Abdulmumuni urged the President to caution his half-brother, Kola Abiola, over the handling of their late father’s company, Summit Oil.
In a statement, Abdulmumuni expressed concerns about the management of the oil firm, claiming that Kola’s leadership is causing unrest within the family and could potentially jeopardize the future of the company.
“Our father's legacy is being put at risk. Summit Oil is a critical asset that should benefit the entire family, but there have been questionable dealings and decisions under Kola’s leadership that need to be addressed immediately,” Abdulmumuni said, calling for transparency and better governance.
Abdulmumuni highlighted that the company, founded by MKO Abiola, one of Nigeria's most iconic figures, plays an important role in the family’s wealth and Nigeria’s oil sector.
He fears that mismanagement could tarnish MKO’s legacy and negatively impact the family's fortunes.
His appeal to President Tinubu, a close associate of the Abiola family, comes as tensions over Summit Oil’s operations have escalated behind closed doors.
According to Abdulmumuni, attempts to resolve these issues privately have been unsuccessful, leaving him with no choice but to seek intervention at the highest level.
“President Tinubu is not only a family friend but also a man of wisdom and integrity. I am confident that his involvement can help resolve these matters amicably and ensure that Summit Oil operates in a way that honors our father’s memory,” Abdulmumuni added.
The plea is likely to intensify the spotlight on the ongoing rift within the Abiola family, as public interest in the legacy of MKO Abiola remains strong. Summit Oil, which was founded in the 1990s, has been a symbol of Abiola’s business empire and a key player in Nigeria’s oil industry.
The Abiola family has yet to issue an official response to Abdulmumuni’s statement, and it remains to be seen whether President Tinubu will take any action in response to the call for intervention.
