In a bold move to reposition Nigeria as a global energy hub, President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of a groundbreaking Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility.
On Friday, the Federal Government issued a "Licence to Construct" to UTM Offshore Limited, marking the official green light for the 2.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) LNG project.
This ambitious development signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s energy landscape, as it taps into its vast natural gas reserves to accelerate economic growth.
The floating LNG facility, designed to operate offshore, will not only boost Nigeria’s gas export capacity but also create thousands of jobs, enhance foreign investment, and contribute to the global clean energy transition.
Industry experts hail the approval as a game-changer for Nigeria, positioning the country as a leader in natural gas production in Africa. The facility will also provide opportunities for domestic use, helping meet the country’s growing energy demands.
With Tinubu’s administration pushing forward major reforms in the energy sector, this approval is seen as part of a broader agenda to diversify Nigeria’s economy, reduce dependency on oil, and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
The construction is expected to begin soon, with UTM Offshore Limited leading the charge, bringing advanced technology and infrastructure to Nigeria’s energy sector. This project, once completed, will solidify Nigeria’s status as a key player in the global LNG market.
