National Day of Solidarity Declared Amid Rising Tensions
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a strong statement to governors, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Charles Soludo of Anambra State, calling for an immediate halt to the alleged victimisation of its members in various universities across the country.
This was part of the resolutions passed by ASUU's National Executive Council (NEC) during its meeting at the University of Ibadan, held on August 17th and 18th, 2024.
The council expressed concern over what it described as the ongoing persecution of its members by university managements in certain states.
In a bold move to draw attention to these grievances, ASUU has declared September 10, 2024, a national day of solidarity with the affected members.
The union plans to rally its members and the wider academic community in a show of unity and support for those it believes are being unfairly treated.
ASUU emphasized that the actions of state governments, including Lagos and Anambra, undermine the independence of academic institutions and the rights of university lecturers.
They are calling on the relevant authorities to take immediate steps to address these issues, failing which the union has warned of possible further actions.
As the date for the solidarity march approaches, there is growing anticipation of how this will impact the already strained relationship between ASUU and some state governments.
The union's resolve to protect its members remains unshaken, even as it calls for dialogue and fairness in resolving the issues at hand.
