NYSC Boss Pushes for Skill Acquisition in Nigerian Defence Academy Curriculum

In a strategic move aimed at equipping future military officers with entrepreneurial skills, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has called on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to embed skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs into its training curriculum.
Speaking during a recent meeting with officials of the NDA, Brigadier General Ahmed emphasized the importance of preparing military cadets for life beyond the uniform.

He noted that incorporating vocational training would not only boost self-reliance but also help in reducing unemployment rates across the country.

"As we equip our officers for service in defense, it is crucial that we also prepare them for life after service. By adding skill acquisition and entrepreneurship to their training, we can foster a generation of military professionals who are equally adept in the civilian sector," he said.

The Director-General highlighted NYSC’s successes in running its Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program for corps members, which has enabled thousands to start businesses and become self-sustaining.

He expressed hope that NDA would adopt a similar approach to training, ensuring cadets are versatile and prepared for challenges outside military service.

This push comes at a time when skill development is gaining momentum across various sectors in Nigeria, with the government encouraging institutions to adopt more holistic approaches to education.

NDA officials have yet to release a formal response, but insiders indicate that discussions on curriculum reform are underway.
