In a bold move, the Workers and Youth Solidarity Network (WYSN), a prominent Nigerian workers’ group, has called on the Tinubu-led administration to immediately release all #EndBadGovernance protesters.
The group expressed concerns over the continued detention of activists arrested during protests advocating for better governance and human rights.
In a statement issued on Friday, the WYSN condemned what they described as a "rising culture of repression" in Nigeria, urging President Bola Tinubu’s government to respect citizens' constitutional rights.
The group, which represents a significant portion of the country's workforce, emphasized the importance of upholding democracy and protecting the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech.
The protests, which initially started as an online movement, gained widespread attention as citizens voiced their frustrations with issues such as corruption, economic hardship, and poor leadership.
Many of the protesters, however, have faced brutal crackdowns by security forces, leading to arrests and accusations of human rights violations.
"We cannot build a prosperous Nigeria on the broken backs of those who demand accountability and fairness," WYSN’s spokesperson said in their statement.
"The right to protest is fundamental, and the continued detention of these activists is an affront to our democracy."
WYSN's demand comes amid growing unrest across the country, with many Nigerians becoming increasingly disillusioned with the current administration’s policies.
The group warned that failure to address these human rights abuses could lead to further unrest and a deepening of the public’s distrust in government institutions.
As the call for the release of the protesters intensifies, all eyes are on President Tinubu's response, with many hoping the government will act swiftly to prevent further tension.
The Nigerian government has yet to release an official statement regarding the WYSN’s demands.
