The National Assembly resumed its plenary session on Tuesday after the annual recess, which started in late July.
However, the sitting was short-lived, as members quickly adjourned proceedings in honour of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, whose recent passing left a void in the legislative body.
In a sombre atmosphere, the plenary opened with prayers for the departed senator, who represented Anambra South.
Lawmakers across party lines took turns paying tribute to Ubah, reflecting on his contributions to national politics and his dedication to his constituency.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio noted that Ubah’s passing was a great loss to the nation, praising him as a visionary leader who worked tirelessly for the betterment of his people. “His passion and energy will be sorely missed in this chamber,” Akpabio said.
After the tributes, a motion was raised to adjourn the session in his honour, a decision unanimously supported by members.
The Assembly will reconvene later in the week to resume its agenda. Meanwhile, arrangements for a state burial are underway, with lawmakers expected to play significant roles in the final rites for Ubah.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s untimely death has sparked outpourings of grief from across the nation, with many describing him as a selfless leader who championed the cause of the underprivileged.
