Russian Embassy Denies Ties to Flag-Waving Protesters in Nigeria

The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has refuted claims of involvement with protesters in northern Nigeria who were seen waving Russian flags.
Reports emerged yesterday of demonstrators marching through the streets, waving Russian flags and chanting slogans, while some held placards with various messages.

The Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed the arrest of a Kano tailor who was producing the flags, along with his sponsors.

In a statement, the Embassy emphasized that Russia does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, including Nigeria. It clarified that the actions of the protesters do not represent any official Russian government policy or position.

The Embassy stated, “The Government of the Russian Federation and its officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way. We respect Nigerian democracy and believe peaceful demonstrations, in line with Nigerian law, are a manifestation of democracy. However, we condemn any disruptions or acts of violence that may arise from these events.”
