The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a brutal and unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the 'Shi'ite' group, on police personnel stationed at a checkpoint near Wuse Junction.
The assault led to the tragic deaths of two police officers, while three others were left unconscious and are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital. In the chaos, three police patrol vehicles were also set ablaze.
The attackers, armed with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices made from bottles filled with kerosene, struck the police checkpoint without warning.
The Commissioner of Police for FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as senseless and unprovoked.
He assured the public that several arrests have been made and vowed that those responsible for the violent act would be brought to justice.
The situation is now reported to be under control, with normalcy restored to the area. The police have promised to provide further updates as the investigation continues.
This report was issued by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, FCT, Abuja.
