In a significant development that could once again disrupt the academic calendar, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government.
This ultimatum comes in response to the government's perceived failure to meet the demands of the university lecturers, who have been in ongoing negotiations over issues such as unpaid allowances, poor funding, and the implementation of previous agreements.
The ASUU National President stated that the union has exhausted all avenues of dialogue and is now compelled to take drastic measures to secure the welfare of its members and the future of higher education in Nigeria.
According to him, the government’s consistent failure to honor its promises has left the union with no other option but to consider industrial action.
In a swift response, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, has moved to address the issues raised by ASUU in an attempt to avert a potential strike that could paralyze academic activities across public universities.
The Ministry has scheduled emergency meetings with key stakeholders, including representatives of ASUU, in a bid to find a lasting solution before the expiration of the 21-day deadline.
The Minister of Education expressed optimism that a resolution would be reached, emphasizing the government's commitment to improving the state of education in the country.
However, he also appealed to ASUU to exercise patience and continue dialogue, warning that a strike would be detrimental to the students and the nation at large.
As the clock ticks down, students and parents across the country are anxiously waiting, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing dispute.
The coming days will be critical in determining whether universities will remain open or if another strike looms on the horizon.
