Tensions Rise as Boundary Dispute Escalates Between Bonta and Okpute

Boundary Demarcation Sparks Controversy and Violence

The boundary demarcation exercise between the Bonta and Okpute communities, initiated by the state deputy governor, has faced significant opposition and escalated into violence.

 The Okpute community rejected the proposed boundary, threatening war if the state proceeded. 

On July 2, 2024, Boundary Commissioner Solomon Daga's attempt to begin the demarcation was thwarted by resistance, forcing a retreat for further consultations.

In retaliation, the Okpute community began destroying farms on a large scale, initiating continuous attacks on the Bonta community.

 These assaults have resulted in four deaths, including two Tiv commuters who were unaware of the ongoing violence while traveling to Oju. Numerous homes in Bonta have also been destroyed.

Amid the turmoil,  report by Mike Ube accused the "Bonta Tiv militia" of attacking the Okpute community with expansionist intentions. 

These allegations have been fiercely denied by Bonta leaders, who assert their community has not initiated any attacks since the crisis began. 

They argue that Bonta leaders have repeatedly called for security measures to prevent further violence by the Okpute militia, allegedly supported by retired Maj. General Ede Ode.

The Bonta community, through Diiv Progressive Agenda (DiPA), had initially appealed for boundary demarcation. 

They refute claims that they oppose the boundary reopening, stressing their desire for a peaceful resolution. 

Additionally, they demand the government of Benue State arrest and prosecute those spreading falsehoods that incite violence against Bonta.

The Bonta community has long alleged attacks by Okpute assailants disguised in military and police uniforms.

 They reference a tragic 2021 incident where Nigerian army personnel were mistakenly killed, a tactic they claim Okpute uses to gain security forces' sympathy.

 Bonta remains vulnerable, with security measures predominantly stationed in Okpute.

DiPA has submitted a position paper seeking a holistic resolution to the conflict, urging the state government to consider their recommendations seriously. 

The lack of equivalent security measures for Bonta, compared to those in Ukpute, exacerbates the community's plight.

 Bonta leaders call for urgent government intervention to protect their community and achieve lasting peace.
