In anticipation of the nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest against rising hunger and misgovernance under President Bola Tinubu's administration, the Inspector General of Police has instructed all state commands to raid vulcanizer shops and confiscate any unused tyres.
This measure aims to prevent protesters from using tyres to start fires on highways and other critical areas.
A leaked police wireless message addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Police Command, and obtained by SaharaReporters, warns divisional police officers (DPOs) that they will face sanctions if tyre fires occur in their jurisdictions.
The exact nature of the punishment was not specified in the message.
The wireless message, dated July 24, 2024, and titled "Order and Directives: Re-Nationwide Protest Against End Bad Government in Nigeria," reads:
"Commissioner of Police directs you to go out at midnight, raid vulcanizer shops in your area, and seize all unused tyres to prevent protesters from using them to set fires on the highway.
Any DPO in whose Area of Operation burn fire occurs will be sanctioned accordingly. All to ensure strict compliance, please."
