In a bold move to enhance protein production, increase employment opportunities, and boost government revenue, Nigeria's Federal Government has justified the creation of a new Ministry of Livestock Development.
The decision, announced by President Tinubu on Tuesday, aims to split responsibilities between the new ministry and the existing Ministry of Agriculture.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, explained that the new ministry would focus solely on livestock development, enabling the Ministry of Agriculture to concentrate on other crucial areas. Fagbemi detailed the plan during a briefing at the State House in Abuja following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
Fagbemi emphasized that despite potential concerns about increasing governance costs, the benefits of the new ministry would far outweigh any additional expenses. He stated, “President Tinubu believes that dividing the Ministry of Agriculture will lead to significant gains in protein production, employment, and government revenue, ultimately improving the lives of ordinary Nigerian citizens.”
The Attorney General highlighted the ministry's role in facilitating large-scale livestock production, which is expected to generate substantial revenue and create numerous job opportunities. Improving protein intake remains a key aspect of the government's livestock development policy.
Addressing concerns about governance costs, Fagbemi acknowledged that while creating a new ministry might seem counterintuitive, the government's overarching goal is to serve the best interests of Nigerian citizens. He concluded, “The new Ministry of Livestock Development will not only enhance our protein intake but also provide significant revenue and employment opportunities, ensuring the benefits far outweigh any costs.”
