During the 2024 Operational Retreat for mid-level officers in Lagos, Barrister Pius Akutah, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), announced that the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill has been approved by the House of Representatives.
The Bill, now sent to the Senate for review, aims to enhance the regulatory framework of Nigeria’s shipping and port sector.
Akutah stated, “Just last week, the House of Representatives passed our bill, the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill.
This is a significant step forward. This past Tuesday, the Senate was ready to pass the bill for Presidential Assent, but the supplementary budget discussion delayed it.
The Senate has completed the first reading, and the remaining step is the bill's passage, which we expect after their recess.”
He added, “I bring you greetings from the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, who has been very supportive. The Minister is committed to developing the Blue Economy sector to contribute significantly to the national GDP.
"The Nigerian Shippers Council is a crucial player in advancing the country’s economy through this sector. Once the law is in place, giving us the authority to enforce regulations effectively, we believe the sector will thrive. We rely on all of you here as the driving force of this agency.”
