Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo Advocates Relocation of Correctional Centres Amid Urbanization Concerns

In response to the rapid urbanization in Nigeria, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has called for the relocation of certain correctional centres to adhere to the government-mandated 100-meter buffer zone.
During a tour of Lagos on Monday, accompanied by officials from various agencies including the civil service defence corps, immigration, and correctional services, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the need for efficient management of government resources and stronger inter-agency collaboration.

Observing the current placement of a correctional facility surrounded by a magistrate court, a church, residential buildings, and commercial structures, Tunji-Ojo remarked, "I see no reason why it should be here. The government is looking into relocating some of these correctional centres, with Ikoyi being a key focus."

Highlighting the legal requirement for a 100-meter buffer zone, Tunji-Ojo noted, "As you can see, the buffer zone here is almost zero. This is a law-abiding government, and we will explore all opportunities to ensure we do what is legally right."

The minister stressed the administration's commitment to transforming correctional centres into places of reformation and correction. He underscored the significance of the name change from "prisons" to "correctional centres" to reflect this goal, but acknowledged the challenges posed by their current locations.

Pointing to the Suleja Correctional Centre, situated just 7 meters from the nearest house, Tunji-Ojo expressed his concern, reiterating the urgent need for relocation to achieve the intended reforms.
