The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has reported that a total of 50 individuals lost their lives in fire-related incidents in the state from January to June in 2024.
The Director of the Agency, Margaret Adeseye, provided this information to SaharaReporters, highlighting that at least 10 buildings also collapsed during this period.
The agency's data showed that eight individuals died in January, four in February, five in March, eight in April, 23 in May, and two in June. Notably, one of the fire incidents took place at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub, on June 26, 2024.
Reporters documented multiple instances of fire damage during this period, including serious damage to the popular Dosunmu market on Lagos Island. This incident occurred just three weeks after four buildings were destroyed by fire at the same market.
Additionally, Reporters had reported that a three-story building located at Breadfruit Street, Balogun Market in Lagos State was ravaged by fire in March.
