Former Army Lieutenant William Calley, Convicted in My Lai Massacre, Dies at 80

Gainesville, FL – William Calley, the former US Army lieutenant convicted of war crimes for his role in the infamous My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War, has passed away at the age of 80.
Calley died on April 28, according to a report from The Washington Post, although his death was only recently discovered through a public records search.

Calley is best known for his conviction in 1971 as the sole member of the US Army held accountable for the My Lai massacre.

The tragic event, which stands as one of the darkest moments in US military history, took place on March 16, 1968.

Acting on erroneous intelligence suggesting Viet Cong soldiers were disguised as civilians in the village of My Lai, Calley's brigade entered the area and committed the atrocities for which he was later prosecuted.
