The Senate has pledged rigorous oversight to ensure that every kobo of the N28.7 trillion "Renewed Hope" budget for 2024 is transparently accounted for.
Senate Spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti-South) shared this commitment with *Saturday PUNCH* while discussing the budget's performance and oversight.
President Bola Tinubu signed the N28.7 trillion appropriation bill into law on January 1, highlighting the administration's dedication to efficient implementation and stringent monitoring. "All institutional mechanisms shall be held to account in ensuring diligent implementation," Tinubu stated.
The National Assembly, on December 30, 2024, increased the budget from the initially proposed N27.5 trillion to N28.7 trillion.
Senator Adaramodu emphasized that the 10th National Assembly would fully engage in overseeing the budget. "The lifespan of the 2023 budget was extended to June this year. So, the full implementation of the 2024 budget, which started in January, will commence in June," he explained. "The 10th Senate, by extension, the 10th National Assembly, will ensure that every kobo appropriated is spent as intended."
Adaramodu promised proactive measures, saying, "We will put the feet of other government arms to the fire to achieve results." He reassured Nigerians that the legislature is committed to delivering the dividends of democracy. "If the executive needs to get water out of stone, so be it. Nigerians cannot wait any longer for results, and we will ensure that all government promises are fulfilled."
