The management of Dangote Refinery announced that it has successfully contained a fire incident that occurred on Wednesday at its multi-billion-dollar facility in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub.
Earlier reports noted the fire outbreak at the refinery, though the cause was not immediately clear. A video circulating on social media, seen by SaharaReporters, showed thick dark smoke emanating from what appeared to be one of the facility's tanks.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Anthony Chiejina, Group Head of Corporate Communications for Dangote Group Nigeria, confirmed, “We have swiftly contained a minor fire incident at our effluent treatment plant (ETP) today, Wednesday, 26th of June. There is no cause for alarm as the refinery is operating, and there is no recorded injury or harm to our staff on duty.”
The Dangote Oil Refinery is a 650,000 barrels per day (BPD) integrated refinery project. Owned by the Dangote Group, the refinery was inaugurated on May 22, 2023, in Lekki, Nigeria.
Additionally, Dangote Industries Limited's (DIL) Vice President of Oil and Gas, Devakumar Edwin, recently claimed that International Oil Companies (IOCs) in Nigeria are deliberately undermining the Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals project. According to Edwin, these companies are inflating local crude oil prices, forcing the refinery to import crude from distant countries like the United States, thereby increasing production costs.
