In the early hours of Thursday, Western Delta University in Oghara, Delta State, was thrust into chaos as a group of armed robbers infiltrated the campus through an unfenced rear section.
The surprise raid around midnight caused widespread panic among students, many of whom fled into a nearby bush to escape the danger. Speaking from her hiding place, one student shared her distressing experience with SaharaReporters: "We're currently in a state of emergency. The university has been overrun by armed robbers, and we're trapped. I'm speaking to you from the bush, where I and some other students fled for safety."
Despite the terror experienced by the students, DSP Bright Edafe, spokesperson for the state police command, provided a different account. He stated that while some miscreants had entered the school grounds on Wednesday night and attempted to rob the students, the situation was quickly handled.
"The school is not under siege, and no students are in the bush. The miscreants entered through an unfenced area and attempted to rob the students, but the students raised an alarm. We dispatched a patrol team, but the robbers fled before the team arrived," Edafe explained.
The incident highlights a security lapse that allowed the robbers access, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures at the university to prevent future occurrences.
