On Thursday, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika and his daughter, after they were arraigned on charges of alleged contract fraud amounting to N2.7 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Sirika, who was reportedly detained on April 23 pending his arraignment. Sirika and his daughter were granted bail of 100 million Naira each.
During the court proceedings, Sirika, his daughter, her husband Jalal Hamma, and Al-Duraq Global Investment Limited, entered pleas of not guilty when the charges were read to them.
The charges against Sirika include conferring unfair advantage in the alleged illegal award of consultancy contracts for the startup of Air Nigeria to Tianaero Nigeria Limited, a company that received N1.3 billion for its consultancy services. Prof. Gabriel Tillman, reportedly an associate of the former Minister, acted as the alter ego of the firm.
Furthermore, Sirika is accused of awarding a contract worth approximately N1.4 billion for the construction of the apron at Katsina Airport to Al-Duraq Global Investment Limited, a company owned by his daughter and son-in-law. The former Aviation Minister's alleged involvement in these contracts has led to charges of fraud and corruption.
The court granted bail to Sirika and his daughter, but the proceedings will continue as the EFCC seeks to prosecute those involved in the alleged contract fraud. The case highlights the ongoing efforts in Nigeria to tackle corruption and ensure accountability for those in positions of power.
